A promo code is a flag on the account, not a credit. It tells the cashier which offers to show you after your first deposit lands. Nothing appears in the balance the moment you type it.

The sign-up button sits top right on desktop and behind the account icon in the app. Choose the one-click or email route; both carry the promo field, and the phone route carries it too once the number is entered.
These two selectors sit above the promo field and they filter it. Pick the country you actually reside in and set the currency to USD; changing either afterwards means a new account, because neither is editable once the profile is created.
On desktop it is the last input on the form, directly under the password box and labelled as a promo code. In the app it is collapsed behind a promotional-code toggle you have to tap open, which is the single most common reason people miss it entirely.
A valid code turns the field green on submit and the account profile then shows a bonus-eligible line. A red border means the code was not accepted, and at that point it is still fixable: nothing has been created yet.
The code by itself credits nothing. It marks the account as eligible; the first deposit of $10 or more is what turns eligibility into a live bonus, and the cashier then asks which of the two offers you want.

The form returns the same generic invalid-code message for every one of these, which is unhelpful enough to be worth a table. Four of the five are recoverable if you catch them before depositing.
There is no promo field in the cashier, only on the sign-up form. Once money has cleared into an account that registered without a code, the welcome offers are permanently off the table for that account.
Fix: none after the fact. Enter the code before you fund anything.
Welcome codes are for new accounts only. A dormant registration from two years ago still counts as existing, and the form will reject the code without saying which detail collided.
